There are many government grants available for veterans, service members, and their immediate family members. These VA benefits include grants for businesses as well as grants that can be used for housing, healthcare and education.
Continue reading below to learn more about these different programs and how you can qualify to receive aid.
Housing
VA grants and loans are available to qualifying veterans, service members, and their family members who are interested in purchasing a home. Additionally, you may qualify for housing grants if you are of a certain age or have a service-connected disability and need to repair or make modifications to your home to support your independence.
There are two grant programs that help veterans pay for necessary modifications through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA):
- Specially Adapted Housing (SAH)
- Special Housing Adaptation (SHA)
Education
There are plenty of VA benefits available to help veterans and their families with education costs. These government grants can be used to pay for tuition, housing, and other school-related costs. There are even some grants for online classes.
The Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant provides educational grants for the qualifying children of service members who died as a result of their military service after 9/11. To qualify, the child must have been younger than age 24 or enrolled part-time or full-time in college at the time of the service member’s death.
The VA also provides the GI Bill for current service members and veterans. This program provides grants for online courses and in-person classes at a college, university, trade school, or other form of higher education.
So, what about scholarships and grants for military spouses? There are a few scholarship opportunities available from private organizations and educational institutions. Additionally, military spouse education grants are available to qualifying military spouses through the Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA). Tuition assistance through this program provides up to $4,000 over a two year period for military spouses pursuing an associate degree, certification, or license in a portable career field.
Small Businesses
Are you in need of financial support for businesses? The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) provides grants for businesses through the Boots to Business program. This program is available to qualifying service members, veterans, and their spouses who launch a small business.
Financial support is typically provided over a five year period. Additionally, the SBA may provide veterans with special loans they can use toward business-related endeavors.
Healthcare
One of the more well-known VA benefits is VA health care. Veterans, service members, and their families can receive comprehensive healthcare at VA health facilities, so long as they meet the program’s requirements. For example, your coverage options can be determined by your discharge status, service-connected disability, or annual income. There are many programs and grants for veterans and their families provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Fortunately, the official VA website provides a centralized portal where you can learn more about the programs and grants you may qualify for, including their eligibility requirements, benefits, and how to apply.
